Originally from a coastal fishing town in Ireland, photographer Barbara Clarke intended to spend one summer on Nantucket. Like so many drawn to the island, as soon as she stepped off the ferry, she knew this was where she wanted to say. Barbara returned the following April and made her home thirty miles out to sea. A trained jeweler and basket maker, today Barbara focuses on photography. Her photographs capture the tranquility and isolated beauty of off-season beaches, like Cisco and Nobadeer. She finds inspiration in the ethereal fog, crashing waves, and ever-changing light on the island. An enthusiastic voice for island artists, she is a member of the Board of the Artists Association of Nantucket.


Barbara has always had a camera in her hand but credits her adopted home of Nantucket Island as playing an important role in her growth as a photographer. Be it the natural world, the moors and beaches, or the built environment, rambling, rose covered cottages and crooked, narrow streets, the island has encouraged Barbara to keep capturing these memorable images. Even a simple morning walk with her dog becomes a deep well of inspiration.
