The Art of Thoughtful Giving: The Story Behind our Gifting Philosophy

A Nantucket Looms gift being wrapped with a handwritten note

Bess Clarke

Long before Nantucket Looms became known for handwoven textiles, interior design, and home furnishings, we were simply a gift shop. In 1967, our founders placed an advertisement in the Inquirer & Mirror announcing the opening of their new “Gift and Christmas Shop.” While we still sell ornaments and red throws each holiday season, that description remains surprisingly accurate. Gifting has always been at the heart of what we do.

For more than forty years, our longtime owner, Liz Winship, often said,

“A gift that costs $10 should be wrapped as though it cost $1,000.”

It wasn't really about the ribbon or the paper. It was about showing the recipient that someone took the time to choose something meaningful. That philosophy has guided us for nearly six decades.

So, when the set designer for Peacock’s adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand's The Five-Star Weekend approached us about creating gift baskets for each of the houseguests, we knew exactly where to begin. After all, we've been putting together thoughtful gifts for 57 years.

In the opening episode, Hollis (Jennifer Garner) welcomes each guest to a beautifully appointed bedroom, complete with a gift basket tailored to her personality. At first glance, you notice the classic Nantucket Lightship Basket overflowing with beautiful things. Look a little closer, and you'll find many of our favorites: a handwoven cotton throw perfect for an afternoon nap after a swim, a generously sized beach towel, our signature soaps and lotions that look as lovely as they smell, and our famous snack mix—filled with all the best parts and none of the filler.

We mention this not because our products appeared on screen, but because the baskets capture something we've always believed: the best gifts are thoughtful, useful, and a little indulgent. They're the things people are genuinely happy to receive and delighted to give.

While a Hollywood-sized gift basket may not be an everyday purchase, every item inside stands beautifully on its own. Whether you're looking for a hostess gift, a birthday surprise, a wedding present, or a little something to welcome guests for the weekend, we offer gifts across a wide range of price points—from signature soaps to handwoven throws.

And just as Liz insisted all those years ago, every gift that leaves Nantucket Looms is wrapped with the same care and attention, because making someone feel special has never gone out of style.

If this story has you thinking about your next gift — large or small — start with Our Favorite Gifts, a collection shaped by the same intention and care that’s defined Nantucket Looms since 1967.
