Nantucket artist Robert (Bobby) Frazier has been making art since the age of twelve, when his mother, Barbara, taught him how to draw and paint. Bobby later joined his mother as a student of Philip Burnham Hicken in the 1970s and 80s on Nantucket. Inspired by the subtle features of Nantucket’s natural landscape, and the island’s endless supply of ever-changing skies, Bobby’s plein air style landscapes intrigue. His work is deeply rooted in tradition, and Bobby works with a limited spread of oil colors—three blues, two reds, a brown, two yellows, and the color white—the same pallet that his mother used.

Bobby moved to Nantucket in the mid-1970s, but he can trace his ancestry back to some of the island’s early settlers. His career in oil painting has been punctuated with time as a science fiction writer, poet, graphic designer, and art director. Bobby was at one time president of the Artists Association of Nantucket, where he now works at the Curator of Exhibitions.
