Robert Miklos

Robert Miklos spent more than four decades observing and interpreting the landscape and character of Nantucket. He now lives and works from his historic Greek Revival home in the heart of the island’s historic district, a setting that continues to inform his artistic perspective. Through his work, Miklos seeks to capture fleeting moments in time while connecting each image to Nantucket’s rich history and enduring legacy.

Despite its small size, the island offers Miklos an endless source of subject matter. Its shifting light, historic architecture, and coastal environment provide a continual invitation to rediscover familiar places through new interpretations. Beyond the island’s natural beauty, Miklos has also been influenced by the artists associated with Nantucket’s long-standing art colony, particularly the work of John Austin.

His artistic approach reflects a range of influences from American art history. The atmospheric sensitivity of Edward Hopper and Andrew Wyeth informs his use of watercolor, while the structural clarity of Precisionist painters Charles Sheeler and Charles Demuth is evident in his compositions. In his collage work, Miklos draws inspiration from artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Romare Bearden.

Working across watercolor and oil painting, Miklos frequently incorporates collage elements into his compositions. His process often begins outdoors, sketching and painting on site in plein air. While he may start with a particular idea or method for developing an image, the work evolves organically as the painting progresses. For Miklos, the vitality of a piece ultimately depends on the energy and expression found in the drawing itself—whether it emerges from a quick observational sketch or forms the underlying structure of a larger painting or collage.
