Mike Bacle

Mike Bacle is a woodcarver inspired by the ocean and the maritime traditions of Nantucket. Raised near Virginia Beach, he began carving as a way to relieve corporate stress and has now worked with wood for more than three decades.

His early work included full‑size swan decoys carved from juniper and cypress. Summers spent in Siasconset inspired him to create large wooden whales, followed later by carved mermaids—each with its own personality.

Bacle collaborates with his wife, Susan Lacouture, who paints the finished carvings. Together they create pieces intended to become heirlooms that celebrate Nantucket’s maritime spirit.
