Liz Roache
Liz Roache is an artist and designer whose work centers on the transformative power of color. For Roach, color is more than a visual element—it is an emotional force capable of uplifting the spirit, shifting moods, and fostering optimism. Whether expressed through bold compositions or quieter palettes, she approaches every piece with the belief that color should act like a welcome presence in a room, drawing viewers in and reminding them that life, at its core, is beautiful.
A defining influence in Roach’s career was her long collaboration with Ati Gropius, with whom she studied and taught for more than thirty years. Gropius, the daughter of Bauhaus founder Walter Gropius and a direct student of Josef Albers, devoted her life to carrying forward the Bauhaus and Albers traditions of color theory and design. Under her mentorship, Roache developed a deep understanding of color relationships and design principles that continue to shape her work today. Their teaching brought them to numerous prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, where Roache also had the opportunity to design products.
Chosen as Gropius’s successor, Roache has continued to advance the teachings and philosophy they shared, integrating them into both her artistic practice and her work with corporate clients. Her creative output spans fine art, design, and product collaborations.
Among her recent projects is the Liz Roache Optimism Collection, a vibrant line of textiles, wall coverings, and rugs created in partnership with the renowned French design house Pierre Frey. The collection reflects Roach’s signature approach—energetic, bold, and crafted with exceptional quality. She has also introduced Liz Roache Fine Art Prints in collaboration with Design Within Reach.
Roache’s work has been placed in a wide range of residential and commercial environments, from private homes and apartments to hotels and corporate offices. Across every setting, her goal remains the same: to use color as a powerful and joyful presence that enriches everyday life.
