James Ogilvy

James Ogilvy discovered his love for photography at an early age, beginning a lifelong
engagement with the camera and the art of image-making. Over the years, he has worked with a
wide range of cameras and formats, from 35mm rangefinders and SLR to vintage twin-lens
reflex models and a cherished Pentax 6x7. Many of these cameras remain part of his collection
today, each carrying with it a treasury of visual memories. In his early years, he spent countless
hours in the darkroom developing and printing black-and-white photographs, refining both his
technical skills and artistic eye.
Ogilvy’s photographic interests have spanned a variety of genres, and while at university, he
established a small photographic business. His professional career later expanded into
publishing when he founded and ran Luxury Briefing, an industry magazine that brought
together the many facets of the global luxury sector. Alongside his work in publishing, he
continues to consult for luxury brands. His travels for writing and editorial work have taken
him extensively around the world, often combining journalism with his own photography.
In recent years, another long-held passion—landscape design—has become an important part
of his creative life, further sharpening his focus on landscape photography. Although he lives in
Scotland, Ogilvy has spent nearly three decades visiting Nantucket off Cape Cod, a place whose
shifting light and coastal character provide enduring inspiration.
His photographic series “Thin Places” reflects the ancient Celtic and Christian idea of locations
where the boundary between heaven and earth feels especially close. For Ogilvy, the pursuit of a
beautiful image often becomes a contemplative experience, capturing moments of stillness that
invite reflection and renewal.
