Cashmere: Our Softest Throw, Reinvented

Cashmere: Our Softest Throw, Reinvented

For decades, Nantucket Looms has been producing handwoven cashmere throws. The softest and most luxurious of all our handwovens, cashmere has been popular as a gift for some of life’s most special ocassions. All throughout the winter, Nantucket Looms weavers have been working hard upstairs in our Main Street studio to produce our latest line of cashmere throws. Just as luxurious as before with the same handwoven quality, our new cashmere throws combine lasting quality with a new and updated style.

What makes cashmere our softest and most luxurious handwoven? It comes down to a combination of the quality of the raw fiber and the highly skilled process of hand weaving the finished product. Not only is cashmere soft to touch, it is also durable and up to eight times warmer than sheep's wool - a practical and classically fashionable investment made to last a lifetime.

Cashmere originated in the Kashmir region north of the Indian Subcontinent as early as the Mongolian empire in the 13th century. The fiber comes from the soft undercoat of the Cashmere Goat, which is protected by a top coat of coarse hair. During the spring molting season, this cashmere undercoat is meticulously combed and separated from the top coat. This labor-intensive process, typically done by hand, is one of the reason for such a low global production rate of cashmere (approximately only 6,500 metric tons of pure cashmere is produced each year). Although sometimes ‘cashmere’ is incorrectly used to refer to any soft goat’s wool, only the fiber from the Cashmere Goat can truly be considered 'cashmere'.

Nantucket Looms Handwoven Cashmere Throws

The softest of all our handwovens and a true statement-making piece for your home, our cashmere throw is the ultimate in comfort and fine living. Made from extraordinarily soft, 100% cashmere, this superb throw will elevate the look of any room for many years. Cashmere is not only a fiber that lasts a lifetime, it can also be enjoyed no matter what the season due to it’s excellent insulation. Cashmere is warm in the winter and cool in the spring. And, as it does not wrinkle, cashmere travels well - a perfect souvenir to bring home from your Nantucket vacation!

Care Guide

As cashmere ages, the fiber becomes even softer and with proper care, should not pill after use. We strongly recommend dry clean only. Treat your handwoven cashmere throw with the gentle care it deserves. Please do not wash, wring, hang or twist. With the right care, you can enjoy your Nantucket Looms cashmere handwoven throw for generations.
