South Shore Dunes | Ken Layman
As with all of his work, “South Shore Dunes” is a breathtaking rendering of the island’s landscapes with lush greens blowing in the wind and a powdery blue sky. What is most surprising about this very realistic depiction, is that it is crafted entirely from Layman’s imagination. He does not believe in using photographs or painting en plein air. As he explains it, “It's like I'm going to the movies with my life. I paint them from the part of me that I don't understand - and when they're done, I look at them and say 'that's what I wanted, needed to paint'. I've learned to get out of the way and let the painting happen, not to use my intellect at all."
