Plein air painter Elizabeth Taft calls Martha’s Vineyard home, but travels to our neighboring island of Nantucket frequently to paint. Elizabeth only paints outside on location, working quickly to capture the unique quality of light that comes with living this far out to sea. She seeks to capture an ever-shifting landscape, and there is little time for hesitation. Still, Elizabeth’s larger works can take weeks or years to complete. She always says true to what she sees, painting only what is in front of her. The result is a homage to a particular place, a moment in time.
Elizabeth prefers to paint on wooden panels, reusing old panels and allowing the color from previous paintings to show through. These memories of paintings past add texture and richness to her work. Using wooden panels allows her to render some very large images. For smaller works, she uses linen canvases. Elizabeth received an MFA from the Maryland Institute’s College of Art, and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She shares her knowledge with students at the Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs.
