Notable landscape painter Ken Layman is known for his billowy clouds that typically hover over his sprawling painted landscapes. Portraying that wispy quality of windswept clouds with a beach setting familiar to all who visit Nantucket's famous shores, his clouds are like no other.

Ken Layman’s landscapes, often featuring billowy clouds, are the result of memory. He uses no reference photos, nor does he paint en plein air, instead Ken’s evocative island scenes come from somewhere within. As Ken says: “I paint them from the part of me that I don’t understand.” A prolific painter, Ken has been represented by Nantucket Looms since 1971. His work covers a broad spectrum, from landscape to non-objective, city scenes to the Southwest. He has taught generations of artists at Georgia State University, Newcomb College, and Wheelock College. Ken has passed on his talents to countless artists, many represented by Nantucket Looms.
Ken studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and earned his MA at Tulane University. He was chairman of the art department at Wheelock College. He currently teaches at the Nantucket Artists Association where he is a Life Member. Ken’s work can be seen at the US Department of State and hangs in the American Embassies in Athens, Sao Paulo, Genevea, and New York City. But it is Nantucket he calls home.
