Richard Kemble Flag Collage
Richard Kemble was a prolific artist who, during his lifetime, created more than 350 print editions, with the majority being intricate woodcuts. In the last two decades of his life, Kemble shifted his primary focus to crafting art, channeling his creativity into his residences in Key West and Nantucket. This specific collage is a vivid tribute to Nantucket, reflecting Kemble's deep connection to the island. Made with precision and care, the artwork masterfully combines various elements of news and local narratives, presenting a unique perspective of Nantucket's daily life and historical richness. Though he passed away in 2007, Kemble's legacy lives on in this beautiful piece, a testament to his enduring passion and talent.
Richard Kemble was known for his American flag pieces having created a series of 100 American flags made with remnants of his wood cuttings, paint, and collage materials. After he completing his main series, he periodically made a new one; a pattern that continued for the rest of his life. Having not dated his work, we do not know when each piece was made- whether it was part of the original series or one he produced later. As more of his work is found and collected, the dates of creation continue to keep us busy wondering.
